From the Foreword: "In going over material which descended to me after my father's death, I was delighted to discover lovingly preserved bundles of letters written by my father to the folks back home desrcibing his adventures building roads and bridges in the Philippines, 1908 through 1911. They are addressed primarily to family, including his eight-year-old sister, Emily. These letters vividly describe his observations on the journey to and from the Philippines and his experiences while there. I found the letters so charmingly descriptive and eloquently written that I wanted them in book form so all family members could enjoy them. -- Dorothy Longfellow"
